LB 7

Alright, listening blog 7, for this listening blog I decided to choose the song “what’d I say” by Ray Charles. This song is absolutely insane. It’s a remarkably well made song, the instruments, the theme, the playing, the improv lyrics all work spectacularly. And the story behind this song is a surprising one. The song wasn’t even supposed to exist. During a performance, Ray Charles and his orchestra still had time left during their slot. So they quickly improvised this song and began playing it to remarkable applause. The fact that this song exists is fantastic and is a testament to mankind. Music really can come from anywhere. The actual song itself is surprisingly good, the orchestra plays a catchy tune with a hood rythm to make up for Ray’s lack of lyrics. The song shouldn’t be looked at for a deeper message. It should be looked at with pride and admiration for managing to create this well of a song under that limited of a time Strain. In my opinion. This is the best song from the song options this week. The story behind it is unlike anything we’ve seen all year. And the song itself holds its own against the competition. I’m very happy to have selected it this week.

  1. Ray Charles in general is a testament to mankind! He has such an incredible feel for music and to do so without even being able to see makes it that much more special. I appreciate the way you view music. There's a lot more to a song than the message it conveys. There's a story behind songs too. I'll keep that in mind the next time I listen.

  2. That is amazing that they were able to improv like that! Especially with so many things that go into creating a piece of music, from lyrics to the array of instruments. I agree when there is a song that is created in such a short period of time there isn't much meaning that the composer meant to put in the piece other than to entertain their audience.

  3. I definitely think that this song is legendary for the performance and not as much as the deeper content. This just goes to show how good of a musician he is. I listened to both parts together and you can hear the audience and interactions. It was a solid song and stayed catchy throughout.
