For week 3 of the listening blogs I decided to choose the song "The Sun Didn't Shine" Golden Gate Quartet, it’s a very fun song. And the most immediate thing you’ll notice upon listening to it is that there’s no instruments. This is something I’ve always admired quartets for. In most songs, the instruments make or break the music. Even today a popular song can be all but ruined by a bad instrument choice. So having no instruments at all and purely relying on lyrics is risky. And the quartet nails it. They perfectly bounce off each other and the beat they create is catchy and goes well with the song. I highly suggest listening to it. Each listen creates a new experience and you’ll find something you missed beforehand. With 5 singers it’s easy to miss a key part of the song. On my second listen I found myself humming along to their beat. On the third I started focusing on the lyrics. This song is simply a fun exercise to listen to. A great way to pass the time. And a great first experience for anyone interested in the barber shop quartet genre. Quartets are extremely underrated. Hopefully this type of music makes a comeback.
I totally agree that songs without instruments that it is more risky. So I find those songs more impressive and on top of that I find the same thing with just instrumental music too. The things I've noticed listening to music is that both of them together create amazing dynamic together but when they break the mold and do one or the other we are more critical about it.
ReplyDeleteYou make so many great points Brady! I really like how the build off each other like you stated. Even though they don't have any instruments to fall back on they do a great job at keeping the interest of their audience. I also agree that quartets are underrated. There is so much time and talent that goes into them that is taking for granted. They all have to be in sync or the song won't give off the vibe that the artists are going for.
ReplyDeleteI really like quartets too. They make me wish I could sing like that! They have a really unique feel, dare I say a “vibe,” that I don’t find in any other genre. Even though there aren’t any instruments, they sort of make their voices instruments, so I would argue that the song isn’t entirely dependent on lyrics. The way they blend their voices is really impressive, so they have that to fall on if the lyrics don’t do the trick. But of course, this song does it all.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree it caught me by surprise while listening to the song that it flows so well and they sound so great with no instruments which I find amazing. I agree with the fact that the instruments in a song will make or break it and after listening to this song I might have to dive deep into this genre to see what else they have.
ReplyDeleteI like your input on your song choice. It is really interesting to be able to write a song with no instruments. Instruments in a song are responsible for keeping the beat and with this song they use other ways. I like how you said in songs, instruments make or break the entire thing. Someone is not going to want to listen to a song if they don’t like the beat.
