The song i chose for my first listening blog was "Castle House Rag" by James Reese Europe. It was quite the enthralling experience to listen to. I've never been the biggest fan of songs with lyrics. I was always more into instrumentals and loved listening to the instruments in a song. So Castle House Rag nailed everything i was looking for in a great song. The instruments are wild. symbols clanging and objects shaking. The entire song feels on edge. It just feels fun. There doesn't have to be a deeper meaning to it. However this song can perfectly be used to describe one. It feels like a blank canvas in which to imagine your own stories or lyrics to. And i love that from music. It gets me engaged. It gets me excited, and it makes it much more enjoyable to listen to on multiple occasions. Castle House Rag is a song i can see myself whistling or humming while walking to my classes. It's truly a unique and well executed song. What it "lacks" in symmetry and order it makes up for in pure spirit. It fully utilizes the wild right side of the brain by having coords and notes crash in at any time. Truly embracing the chaos of this song is a truly unique experience.
I totally agree with you. I also like this song. I also love listening to the instruments in a song. I like the way they play each instrument. It's an entertaining song, you can move and dance with this song. It reminds me of the balls and banquets of that time. Thank you for sharing your point of view!
ReplyDeleteI think the song is great and I agree that it makes you want to sit on the edge of your seat for some reason. I definitely love when they all stop except for like 2 instruments and give them the spotlight. I also like that when it starts it is so abrupt and it keeps its same high energy the whole time.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really interesting perspective on the song having no lyrics. Personally I like being able to pick apart meanings and messages from the lyrics of the song, they help me to get into a similar headspace as the writer. I like how you put it though, the empty canvas bit was a really good analogy, it honestly makes me think about the piece with more intent then before. Thank you for sharing!
